On the southern end of the field, stands a 95-meter flagpole; something that is surely hard to miss. It is the tallest flag pole in the world. At the square you have the opportunity of standing before the very pole that was used to proudly hoist the Malaysian flag for the very first time that faithful day when Tunku Abdul Rahman declared independence for the nation!
Hence the name, Dataran Merdeka, which means ?Independence Square?. In its heyday, the square used to be the venue for parades, cricket matches and other important occasions. Today, this historic heart of KL is preserved with beautifully manicured lawns, terraces and a fountain.
