Dataran Merdeka, or Merdeka Square, is a historic landmark in the heart of Kuala Lumpur where the Malaysian flag was first raised on 31st August 1957, marking the country’s independence from British rule. Surrounded by colonial-era buildings, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the square features a large open field and one of the tallest flagpoles in the world. It is a popular spot for visitors to relax, take photos, and learn about Malaysia’s journey to independence. Major national events, parades, and celebrations are often held here.
